Bruno Faria

Scientific background

Bruno Faria leads M³I at IPC, University of Minho. His research combines molecular modelling and materials development to investigate how molecular interactions, nanostructure and interfaces influence the response of polymers, metals and nanocomposites. He collaborates with other researchers on material preparation, characterisation and fabrication.

Training and research trajectory

Trained in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry at Instituto Superior Técnico, he completed his integrated master’s in 2007 and PhD in 2019. After postdoctoral research at Técnico’s Centre for Structural Chemistry (2019–2022), he joined IPC as an Assistant Researcher in 2022.

His published work spans nanomechanics, model development, carbon chains and porous carbon architectures, metallic nanocomposites and polymer–nanomaterial interfaces. These studies examine how bonding, confinement and contact between components affect deformation and load transfer.

From interfaces to materials development

He coordinates 3D-BONECRAFT, an FCT exploratory project combining molecular modelling and experimental development of PHA–MXene materials for filament extrusion and 3D printing of bone-scaffold prototypes.

He also led the UT Austin Portugal project on nanoporous transition-metal carbonitride membranes for desalination, funded in 2024–2025.

Teaching, supervision and communication

His teaching covers Polymer Science, Materials Characterisation, Transport Phenomena and Computer-Aided Engineering. He supervises and co-supervises master’s research and co-supervises doctoral research through the collaborations presented here.

He coordinates and teaches A Arte de Falar em Público sobre Ciência and delivers training in scientific communication and public speaking, helping students and researchers explain their questions, methods and findings.
